Of course the US has pickpockets… but it’s really only in big cities with lost of tourists. Just the same in Europe. I wouldn’t worry too much about it, to be honest.

Does the US even have pick pockets? That’s not a concern I have here. This article however is frightening. It makes Europe sound like the wild west.

Wear a pair or two of handcuffs openly, if someone tries to nab your stuff hook them, with a note previously made on the cuffs for the local police to come pick them up.

Well, except for New Orleans. New Orleans is FULL of con men, pickpockets, and thieves. I’ve been hustled multiple times. Was swarmed by a group of guys telling me how pretty I was (and touching my coat, hair, etc.) in the middle of the day. It was only when I yelled “get the #### off of me” real loud did they disappear. No one saw or heard it happen. Also had my camera lifted in the airport. Set it down to pull out my airplane ticket from my bag – and when I went to pick it up it was gone! I recently went back there again and a friend of mine had the “drunk bump” from a street kid. She knew what was happening instantly and yelled at her so lost nothing but gotta watch out!

A group of guys needed assistance trying to find their transport queue gate. They seemed very confused so I assisted them with reading the transportation sign. That is after I sized them up. As I spoke to the confused guy two others slowly moved to my right. The guy I was speaking to put his ticket in my face and pointed at the board. When he did this I slid my backpack off and swung it around to my front while I read the board and his expired ticket advising him to go to the help desk. I then walked away noticing other onlookers looking at me in amazement that I did not fall for it. Glad I trusted my gut instinct and followed through on keeping my bag in sight and secure.

You must stay vigilant at all times and make sure to carry very little on you as possible when sightseeing or going out at night/into crowded areas. I know many people who have gotten pickpocketed and it makes traveling very stressful and hectic. However, if you remain cautious and smart, you probably won’t run into any issues.

Really loved reading most of them. Most of the travelers are aware of it , even though they might forget while enjoying the city or tourist destinations.
Travel safe but enjoy your travel.

I’m Aussie and going on exchange to Norway next year, so doing some travelling in Europe while i am there. I had no idea pickpocketing was such a big issue!!
I have forgottton bags and purses in taxis, bus stops, and other public places and every time, someone has run after me to return it or found some form of contact details inside and got in touch to return it to me with everything still inside.
It’s true, aussies are pretty honest in that aspect and i have never had to worry about my valueables.
Now I am worried and kind of pissed of lol, I dare someone to try and pickpocket me and they will feel the warmth of my hands slapped across their face. Although, reading here, i don’t want to land in jail.
Still, how rude!

Wow, I’m glad they weren’t able to get any of your money! I’m white, but my husband is asian and we are traveling to Paris next week. I don’t know if a “mixed couple” will be targeted the same as two asians, but we will be sure to be extra careful either way! The sling bag and stretch jeans are a good idea.
